The Ukraine Action Summit, organized by the American Coalition for Ukraine, concluded on Tuesday, April 16th. With over 500 delegates from 47 states flying in to Washington, D.C., to meet with their elected officials and advocate for Ukraine, this was one of the largest and arguably most important Ukraine Action Summits organized to date.
Marianna Tretiak, President of the Board of Directors of the American Coalition for Ukraine, stated, “This Summit marked a significant step forward as our community of advocates continues to grow and evolve. Notably, student advocates from the Ukraine Student Action Summit and Christian faith leaders joined our ranks for this Summit. We took great strides in refining and enhancing our delegates’ training, ensuring they were well-prepared and informed for their meetings on the Hill. Collaborating closely with local community leaders, our outreach team ensured robust representation, resulting in delegates from 47 states. Together, our delegates conducted over 350 meetings, effectively conveying the urgent need for support for Ukraine directly to the offices of elected officials.”
Long-stalled military assistance for Ukraine was introduced to the U.S. House of Representatives immediately following the Summit. The package was endorsed by the American Coalition for Ukraine and gained broad bipartisan support. On Saturday, April 20th, the package was brought to a vote in the House of Representatives and successfully passed.
The Coalition’s Ukraine advocates continue to push for support for Ukraine as the package is scheduled for a vote in the U.S. Senate this week. Ukraine’s security and survival are under attack, and we implore every Member of Congress to conscientiously consider and expedite the passage of these bills. By providing Ukraine with the resources it needs to defend itself and rebuild in the face of adversity, the United States sends a clear message to authoritarian regimes everywhere: aggression will not be tolerated and freedom will prevail.
###
The American Coalition for Ukraine believes in democracy, freedom, human rights and dignity for all people, and in particular for Ukrainians who are giving their lives in defense of these principles. Coalition partners call the United States home, but many of us share historic experiences of oppression, violence and war in our countries of origin and ancestral homelands — many times at the hands of Russian imperialism. We wholeheartedly support Ukraine in its defense of the universal values of freedom and human dignity.
